  • United Oil at 705 N Eastern Ave., $5.79
  • 7-Eleven at 1302 E Slauson Ave., $5.79

Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. There was a groundbreaking on Wednesday morning for the new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center in Exposition Park. It will be the new home of the retired NASA space shuttle Endeavour. “Endeavour will be displayed vertically as if ready for launch, complete with a massive external tank and solid rocket boosters on each side.” (The Bakersfield Californian)
  2. On Wednesday, a 44-year-old Oklahoma man with Los Angeles ties was arrested “on a federal criminal complaint alleging that he telephoned bomb threats to five Los Angeles schools, including two elementary schools, and also threatened to shoot the children as they exited one of the elementary schools.” These threats date back to February 28, April 27, 28. If convicted, he could do 10 years in federal prison. (Justice Department)
  3. Los Angeles now has a chief heat officer, who is the director for the Climate Emergency Mobilization Office. The position was created by Councilmember Paul Krekorian and focuses on a “response to extreme heat, which is considered the deadliest climate risk facing the city.” Public cooling centers, the city’s tree canopy and building code updates are part of the job. (LAist)
  4. The homeless encampment near Virgil Middle School gave rise to a proposal that would result in the “drafting of a measure to ban homeless encampments within 500 feet of schools and daycare centers citywide.” It is interesting to note that this proposal was not reviewed by the Homelessness and Poverty Committee, which means that “if the final draft is voted through, enforcement so far delayed a year, will become an immediate priority for hundreds, if not thousands, of school campuses across the city.” Councilmembers Mike Bonin and Nithya Raman opposed the idea. (Fox)
  5. The watering restrictions went into effect on Wednesday. “Outdoor watering is restricted to two days per week, down from the current three, with watering permitted at odd-numbered street addresses on Mondays and Fridays, and at even-numbered addresses on Thursdays and Sundays.” Moreover, there is no watering between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Also, sprinklers can only run for eight minutes at each station. Warnings, penalties and flow restrictors are on the table for those not cooperating. (ABC)
