Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- A three-story apartment building at 425 South Kingsley Drive in Koreatown caught fire on Friday morning at 6:07 a.m. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) arrived and found a “modern style apartment building (two stories over parking) with nothing showing.” However, once firefighters went inside, they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor. They went in, contained the fire to just one unit, put it out and evaluated a neighbor for possible smoke inhalation. “Cause and $ loss TBD.” (LAFD)
- Kyoto Sushi in the West Hills neighborhood lost its liquor license last week. Reportedly, the “restaurant furnished alcohol to a 20-year-old employee” who was later involved “in a deadly crash that killed a 12-year-old and 16-year-old passenger in another vehicle.” The restaurant is now listed as “permanently closed.” (California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control)
- Attend a FREE virtual event put on by the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. Scheduled for January 1 at 2 p.m., a “Kotohajime will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with the theme Hatsu-U or ‘First Hare.’” Enjoy the artistry of “internationally acclaimed violinist Ken Aiso, pianist Valeria Morgovskaya, kimono organization Nadeshikokai, the Honorable Fujima Kansuma, and dancers from the Colburn School.” (Rafu Shimpo)
- Sister Aimee Semple McPherson’s Angelus Temple at 1100 Glendale Boulevard is turning 100! Now housed in the Foursquare Church, the congregation is hosting a virtual centennial celebration on New Year’s Day. Down the line, the congregation plans on tent revivals and other events to celebrate. (The Eastsider L.A.)
- If you’re partying this weekend, don’t drive drunk. Metro offers FREE bus and rail rides on New Year's Eve from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. In related news, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) plans on “a blitz of DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols to catch intoxicated drivers.” (L.A.
