📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 76.2% don’t want fireworks, 15.5% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 7.1% want to choose what to buy, and another 1.2% don’t care one way or the other.)

Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. One hundred firefighters battled a Hollywood Hills brush fire on Monday. Located near Universal Studios, crews arrived at the 3650 block of Barham Boulevard around 9:36 p.m. It took 75 minutes to contain the fire, but experts warned that “fires in this area have been known to be very stubborn and taken days to put out.” (CBS)
  2. Monday was also a busy day for the LAFD in Chatsworth. A firefighter was hurt when responding to flames at “22230 West Chatsworth Street around 3:43 p.m.” The LAFD achieved containment by 5 p.m. Earlier that day, there was a fire “near the 22000 block of West Chatsworth Street,” which was contained within 30 minutes. (Patch)
  3. Remember when the City’s Green New Deal promised 90,000 trees to be planted by 2021? We learned Tuesday that “more than 65 thousand saplings have been planted.” Officials now say that “it is up to city residents to plant and care for trees.” However, there is a program in place to deliver free trees to residents or plant trees in public areas, when residents promise to tend to the tree for its first three to five years. (Grant Shala)
  4. UCLA is adding a new undergraduate degree: a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies. Tuesday’s announcement explains that it will be part of the Gould School of Law and “prepares students to understand how law shapes modern culture and to explore emerging employment opportunities, while benefitting from a unique multi-disciplinary education.” (Bakersfield)
  5. Mark your calendars! Arsenio Hall will host the annual Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival. It is currently scheduled for Saturday. The lineup includes Chief aTunde Adjuah, Gregory Porter, and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. (LA Sentinel)
