📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 74.4% don’t want fireworks, 17.9% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 5.1% want to choose what to buy, and another 2.6% don’t care one way or the other.)

Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. The Chesapeake Apartment complex on Obama Blvd. is getting an inspection by the Health Department and by Code Enforcement. Inspectors began their work on Monday, after numerous residents of the 425-unit complex complained, protested and otherwise made their voices heard. Allegations include “broken pipes spewing raw sewage into the building, vermin, toxic black mold and faulty heaters causing carbon monoxide poisoning.” (LA Sentinel)
  2. On Wednesday, there was a shooting near Wadsworth and 80th Street. Witnesses saw someone running with a gun. The LAPD made quick work of the situation, found the suspect, took them into custody and collected a rifle and a handgun. (LAPD)
  3. On Thursday, the LAPD announced that a threat of a mass shooting in downtown L.A. is not credible. The threat surfaced on Wednesday, when a suicide prevention center employee took to social media and posted they “got a call from someone saying they were going to shoot as many people as he can.” Some offices closed. (Fox)
  4. Could Valley Boulevard get a cyclist-friendly makeover? Thursday’s scuttlebutt suggests that the makeover would run from Mission Road to Soto Street. This four-mile-stretch could “include bus lanes and a possible sidewalk level and a two-way cycle track, while sinking railroad tracks to reduce crossings and improve safety.” However, if this plan does come to fruition, it’ll take five to ten years to make it happen. (Biking LA)
  5. If you are a loyal guest at Lulu, located in Westwood’s Hammer Museum, listen up! Although open since November, the restaurant will just now offer “dinner service on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5 to 7 p.m.” A “prix fixe menu is available only to those who reserve.” (L.A. Eater, Lulu)

Are you a Los Angeles resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
