LA Deputies Shoot Rooftop Gunman Who Fired On Helicopter: Report

A gunman reportedly fired several rounds at a sheriff's department helicopter Thursday before deputies fired back.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies reportedly shot and killed a rooftop gunman who fired several rounds at a sheriff's department helicopter in the South Los Angeles-Compton area Thursday night.

The shootout began shortly before 8 p.m. near East Rosecrans Avenue and South Cahita Avenue at the border of Compton and South Los Angeles, KTLA reported. It lasted for about an hour.

Deputies deployed a flashbang and climbed onto the roof, and the gunman was lying unmoving with a shotgun on the roof nearby when the smoke cleared, according to footage captured by KTLA's Sky5 .

Deputies returned fire at about 8:45, and the suspect was seen lying on the roof shortly after.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed to City News Service that deputies returned fire, but the department could not confirm his condition Thursday night.
