📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 75% don’t want fireworks, 15.9% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 6.8% want to choose what to buy, and another 2.3% don’t care one way or the other.)
Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
- On Monday, an estimated 50 laundry workers plan a protest against low wages. They will join supporters at “at 2:30 p.m. at the Western States Regional Joint Board for Workers United-SEIU, at 920 Alvarado St.” Among others, they speak for “Latina women who work in hospitals, restaurants, hotels and other workplaces.” This protest follows on the heels of a June 3 letters sent to “the general managers of more than 70 laundries — including Aramark Uniform Services, Mission Linen, Crothall Healthcare and Domestic Uniform Rental — demanding higher pay.” (WooDZog)
- We’re number one! But it isn’t good news. We learned on Saturday that Los Angeles “is the worst city in the state for dog attacks on postal workers and the fourth-worst nationwide.” Even though mail carriers receive training in how to avoid dog bites, owners can do their part with keeping dogs leashed, away from the door or behind a fenced yard portion. If you don’t, the carriers “may halt delivery altogether if they feel unsafe.” (Patch)
- Fire season is here. Friday afternoon, there was the first of several wildfires “near Interstate 5 in the Grapevine area.” Several smaller fires appeared to move toward merging. “The Grape Fire on Friday was mapped at 19 acres.” If you haven’t done your brush clearing yet, this is your reminder. (Wildfire Today)
- Did you know that homeless encampments in DTLA were moved before dignitaries arrived for the Summit of the Americas at the L. A. Convention Center? Proponents explain that the temporary move was necessary for the establishment of a security zone. Critics are frustrated because the move is only temporary, while others say that it's “[people] being shoved aside for one week and then poof, they're gone, and still don't have a home.” (ABC)
- Mark your calendars! On Saturday, June 18, at the Original Farmers’ Market, there will be a “first-ever Pickle Palooza.” There will be “foodie influencers, live music and photo opps themed to pickles.” Besides that, you can participate in eating contests. Be there at 1 p.m.! (NBC)
