Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- On Wednesday, Los Angeles Council President Nury Martinez was among council members to introduce a motion that would result in more implementation of the 2015 Mobility Plan. It was supposed to make the City “more pedestrian-friendly by 2035, but has barely been implemented.” If approved, city workers would “conduct Mobility Plan improvements while performing unrelated street resurfacing and slurry seal projects.” However, the motion was not scheduled for a vote. (Spectrum News 1)
- There is a Granada Hills property where multiple shipping containers, cars and RVs are cluttering the area. In spite of requests, no actions were taken. On Thursday, the LAPD swarmed the property and searched the containers and vehicles. (CBS)
- The annual Fleet Week celebration is starting today. It is free to attend and lasts all weekend. There will be “live entertainment, aircraft flyovers, live military band performances across LA and active duty ship tours.” You can tour the USS Essex and the USS Portland. On Memorial Day, there will be an evening service at the Battleship IOWA in San Pedro. (NBC)
- Will North Hollywood adult establishment dancers unionize? We learned on Tuesday that Star Garden Topless Dive Bar dancers are striking over safety issues. “It's not far-fetched at all to think that we could be stalked or assaulted, stolen from and killed. These are the risks that we take in this industry,” a dancer explained. In addition to demanding safe working conditions, they voted to unionize with Strippers’ United. (KCRW)
- Six people transported “more than nine tons of materials from Arizona in order to take advantage of the California Redemption Value program.” On Wednesday, they were charged with “recycling fraud and grand theft.” The suspects hoped to clear around $10 million. (CBS)
