🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 30.6% favor more infrastructure investment, 16.7% want federal involvement, 1.4% say faith-based groups need to step up, 5.6% want the military to open its bases, and 43.8% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:
1) Mulholland Drive Safe Update: We learned on Thursday that there were actually two “large steel safes found near a scenic overlook off Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills.” According to the LAPD, they are gun safes that appeared to have been tampered with. The smaller safe turned out to be empty. The “larger 600-pound safe” contained an empty gun rack. The PD is now looking for the owners. (NBC)
2) There was a home invasion robbery on Wednesday around 2:30 p.m. in the 6600 block of West 5th Street. A 71-year-old woman was pistol-whipped. A few short hours later, we learned that the police arrested a 31-year-old suspect “in the 1200 block of Meadowbrook Avenue.” Residents are calling “for change in a city where violent crime is skyrocketing and spreading to neighborhoods that rarely had a problem with serious crime in the past.” (Patch)
3) The Fashion District’s City Market project is on again. We learned on Thursday that the project, which was announced a decade ago, approved in 2018, and vetoed in 2020 by Mayor Eric Garcetti, is once again moving forward. It “would transform a former produce wholesale center bounded by 9th, 11th, San Pedro, and San Julian Streets into a mixed-use, high-rise complex” with “up to 948 residential units, a 210-room hotel, a 300,000-square-foot educational institution, and 225,000 square feet of commercial space.” Now, Kevin de Leon says that the project will “help the city of Los Angeles meet its targets under the Regional Housing Needs Assessment.” That said, there is no timeline in play for a project that was to take 25 years to realize. (Urbanize)
4) On May 26, we first discussed dancers at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar forming a union. On Wednesday, we learned that they “submitted a petition with the federal government, beginning a process that could see them represented by performers union Actors' Equity.” While dancers assert they like what they do, they “want health insurance and other benefits, like workers' compensation. They need protection from sexual harassment, discrimination and unjust terminations.” (Patch, Yahoo!)
5) Mark your calendars! It’s chicken Tenderfest on Saturday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Organizers “collaborated with the world's best chicken spots like Willie Mae's, Raising Canes, Howlin’ Rays, Delilah, Original Dinos Famous Chicken, Daring, and LA’s Go Go Bird.” There’ll also be plant-based tenders. Doors open at noon. (Bucket Listers)
