Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. There was a commercial fire on Sunday around 3:45 a.m. A business called Nice Cap at 1325 South Los Angeles Street caught on fire. “The fire burned hot and heavy through stacked and packed textiles in the business. Flames eventually spread to the roof and caused a partial collapse.” Firefighters focused their efforts on avoiding a spread of the flames. It took more than 130 firefighters over two hours and 40 minutes to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries. (KTLA)
  2. As of Sunday, Medi-Cal coverage has been extended its eligibility to include “individuals 50 and older regardless of their immigration status.” (Spectrum News 1)
  3. We learned on Monday that it’s getting more difficult to rent in L.A. “It’s now common for L.A. landlords to demand that applicants show months of paystubs verifying high incomes, proof of timely rent payments during the pandemic and excellent credit scores.” However, there’s pushback. “City Councilman Mike Bonin said these mounting barriers are hurting the city’s ability to reduce homelessness,” and calls for limitation of screening practices. On the other side are the landlords, who say that their need to protect themselves financially has increased because of government regulations. (LAist)
  4. Thursday, a new podcast launched. “BEING Trans, follows the lives of four trans folks living in Los Angeles over several months.” It is an unscripted show that follows the “cast members navigating everyday issues like dating, career goals, mental health and family dynamics.” If this sounds familiar, consider that the producers are also behind MTV’s The Real World. (LA Magazine)
  5. As of last week, DTLA has a Jollibee! Located at 729 Seventh Street, it’s near the Bloc. Get to know the brand or enjoy the food you love a little closer to home by ordering the restaurant’s “fried chicken, peach mango pie and Filipino spaghetti.” (LA Eater)
