  1. The hazmat team arrived in the area near 232 W. 115 Street after reports of an overdose. “One person is dead, and two other people were hospitalized Monday morning, suspected of overdosing on an unknown substance.” According to the LAFD, “two people were found inside a vehicle in critical condition, and a third person was found outside the vehicle with minor conditions.” (Fox)
  2. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva wants to clean up homeless encampments before the tourist season. We learned Monday that he “is offering to send his deputies outside their jurisdiction and into a City of Los Angeles neighborhood to clear out homeless encampments — this time in Hollywood. He also said his department has plans to ‘invade the beach again’.” Supporters call it “boldly proactive” while critics find it “politically performative. (Patch)
  3. DOG PPL is a social club for dog owners with more than 900 members as of Monday. “The people behind it say they provide a clean environment and protection for dogs. It's also a social club for dog owners that includes a café, bar, and lounge.” Members pay $80 a month for the privilege of belonging. (ABC)
  4. The Hawthorne Arts Complex is closing to be “redeveloped.” This means that the 100-or-so artists using the “more than 40,000 square feet of affordable studio space” must leave. “The property manager said the building is not being sold,” we learned Monday. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. In addition to beer, Samuel Adams has a philanthropic program, aptly called Brewing The American Dream. Each year, it holds a pitch room competition that awards $10,000 to an outstanding entrepreneur. We heard Monday that this year’s winner is Nobe’s Plant Based Food. She served up “a plant-based pitch and samples of her crab cakes.” “The label was super clean including ingredients. It was almost indistinguishable from a regular crab cake in taste and texture. We felt that she really perfected this product over time,” judges said. (LA Weekly)
