Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. At around 2:15 a.m. on Monday morning, the LAFD responded to a fire in the 7100 block of North Owensmouth Avenue. There, they “found several dumpsters with heavy fire in the carport of a one story, commercial building.” There were no injuries and firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from entering the commercial structure. (LAFD)
  2. Later on Monday, at around 2 p.m., drivers began reporting a fire in the Bouquet Canyon area of the Angeles National Forest. Authorities believe that an overturned vehicle started the blaze that “scorched an estimated 50 acres of grass.” The response included “water- and retardant-dropping aircraft,” wildland fire engines, crews on foot and water tenders. (NBC)
  3. What does a lifeguard make? We learned on Tuesday that the highest-paid L.A. lifeguard “earned $510,283 — a healthy increase from his 2020 salary of $442,712.” Another 98 lifeguards “earned at least $200,000 including benefits last year.” (LA Mag)
  4. Recently, we talked about the long-awaited electric fire truck that the LAFD purchased. We learned on Monday that the $1.2-million truck sprung a leak and had to be returned to the manufacturer. It had “yet to be placed in service after its May 17 debut as the first electric fire truck in North America. There is no date on its return.” (Jeff Vaughn)
  5. Mark your calendars! The Music Center’s Dance DTLA events are coming back. Taking place at Jerry Moss Plaza, the first event is scheduled for June 3 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Each event will be a theme night, with the first one honoring Motown. The last event takes places September 2 and focuses on Samba. (Music Center)
