Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. On Thursday morning, the LAPD received reports of an armed man in Koreatown who allegedly assaulted someone with a gun. The suspect was fatally shot by officers. “A gun was recovered, and no officers were hurt.” (Turn to 23)
  2. There was a shooting at Oxnard Street and Coldwater Canyon, in front of Grant High School. It happened on Wednesday at 3:24 p.m. A teen was shot, treated and transported to the hospital. “Authorities believe the incident was gang related.” The alleged suspect was driving a green Honda Accord. (ABC)
  3. We learned on Thursday that the Los Angeles Unified School District warns parents of several “teen overdoses tied to fentanyl-laced drugs” that youngsters bought online. For example, some teens believed they had bought ecstasy. Instead, “three girls ingested fentanyl-laced drugs last week and overdosed in Santa Monica.” (Patch)
  4. Expect traffic delays between June 6 and 10. The city will host the Summit of the Americas, which brings dignitaries and world leaders to town. Mayor Eric Garcetti warned that there will be “temporary changes to traffic patterns in some parts of the city.” Areas of concern are DTLA and LAX, particularly “the areas between the 10 and 101 freeways, and west of the 110 should be avoided whenever possible.” Besides that, L.A. Metro buses and DASH routes may deal with route changes. (L.A. Mayor)
  5. A pet-related business caught on fire Wednesday evening. Located in the 800 block of Virgil Avenue, firefighters fought the blaze and rescued 14 dogs and cats. Los Angeles Animal Services took 12 animals in after the LAFD treated them for smoke inhalation. (The Eastsider)

Are you a Los Angeles resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
