Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. Two people were shot to death while visiting a car show at Peck Park on Sunday. The event attracted around 500 people and a dispute among some escalated. According to Councilman Joe Buscaino, it was an “unpermitted car show hosted by gang members.” At this time, the LAPD have not made any arrests. (Spectrum News 1)
  2. On Monday, in the early morning, a shooting wounded someone “near Hill Street.” This location is next to the 110 and near Dodger Stadium. “The Hill Street off-ramp into Chinatown” remained close for several hours. (The Eastsider LA)
  3. July in Pacoima can be brutal. We learned on Monday that “streets are scorching, with the asphalt radiating 127 degrees of heat at noon, according to a temperature reading. An hour later, it rises to 141.8 degrees.” An experiment is now trying to drive down ambient air temps with an “epoxy acrylic coating” sprayed on the asphalt. After two applications, asphalt is “10.2 degrees cooler.” (Bloomberg)
  4. A Los Angeles barber is in hot water after reportedly “tripping on a street vendor for selling fruit outside his barber shop.” A Sunday social media post quickly took the barber to task, and folks were angry. The barber has since responded on social media stating that he apologized to the vendor and offered to pay for the damage he caused. (Foo Community Official, Wester Barber)
  5. Mark your calendars! The Whiskey Festival is coming to The BLOC on August 19. There will be “distiller meet-and-greets, unlimited tastings, live music and hors d'oeuvres.” Find your designated driver today! (Patch)
