📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. Scofflaws may be fined $500, $1,000, or more. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 76.5% don’t want fireworks, 17.6% want “safe and sane fireworks,” 2.9% want to choose what to buy, and another 2.9% don’t care one way or the other.)
Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:
- While votes are still being counted, we know that L.A. County only had a 17% turnout, which is a new low. A voter said it best when opining that “For us to vote for someone, it's hard because we have voted so many times, and they have brought us down so many times.” The votes that were cast sent City Council members Bob Blumenfield, Monica Rodriguez, Curren Price, and Gil Cedillo back to work for another term. Mitch O’Farrell will face Hugo Soto-Martinez in a November runoff. The same goes for Tim McOsker and Danielle Sandoval, and Katy Young Yaroslavsky and Sam Yebri (most likely). Kenneth Mejia and Paul Koretz will have a runoff for Ron Galperin’s job; Marina Torres and Faisal Gill will battle for City Atty. Mike Feuer’s job. Rick Caruso and Karen Bass will go another round for the position of mayor. At this time, L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has a lead over Robert Luna. (LAist, L.A. Times)
- Wednesday, we talked about the leadership changes that the Lakers and Angels are undertaking. On Tuesday, we also learned that the Los Angeles Sparks have let go their head coach and general manager. His assistant will be the interim coach. “The Sparks missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2011.” (KTLA)
- There’s a heatwave coming. Experts at the National Weather Service have issued an excessive heat watch running from today to Sunday. “Some temperatures are expected to climb as high as 117 degrees Saturday.” In L.A., temps head into the 85s and up. On Monday, they go back down to the low to mid 80s, where they will remain for “the rest of the week - and likely the rest of the summer.” (Patch)
- Art scene insiders rejoice as Marian Goodman announced its Los Angeles expansion. We learned on Wednesday that the top gallery “will take over a 1920s warehouse campus in Hollywood, located at 1120 Seward Street just above Santa Monica Boulevard.” (ARTnews)
- Mark your calendars! FishFest 2022 is this Saturday at the Five Point Amphitheatre. Starting at 4:30 p.m., the family-friendly event features Jeremy Camp, Bethel Music, and more! (FB)
