- A man on an apartment complex balcony in the area of 700 North La Brea Avenue was witnessed beating a dog at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Passersby yelled at him to stop it. The man “argued back, then produced an unknown type firearm and shot at the witnesses, striking one.” If you know who he is, drop a dime and call 1-800-222-8477. (KTLA)
- The third American International Paderewski piano competition is currently happening at Loyola Marymount University. Competitors have until Saturday to showcase their talents. The lengthy run is due, in part, to this year’s expansion of the field from 25 semifinalists to 28. (Spectrum News 1)
- Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $436 million to “Habitat for Humanity International and an additional 83 Habitat affiliate organizations.” “Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles has received $20 million,” we learned Wednesday. The organization intends to use the funds to build more homes, repair existing homes, and provide home loans to those “historically blocked from economic opportunities due to racial inequities.” (My News LA)
- Doctor Alexander Rivkin of L.A. is using his connections and expertise to provide Ukrainian physicians with “battlefield tourniquets and specially treated stop-the-bleed gauze.” With one shipment already out the door on his own dime, he is now trying to do more by accepting donations. Tourniquets cost $28 each, he said Tuesday, “but their value in being able to save a life or a limb can't be measured.” (ABC)
- Dine L.A. is starting its two-week run on April 1. It is an ongoing dining series that “offers eaters a chance to check out places that they may not have otherwise enjoyed, usually with a robust and reduced-price menu in town.” (L.A. Eater)
