Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
- There was a fatal shooting outside the Grand Central Market on South Broadway on Saturday. “Multiple social media videos (show) workers, locals, and tourists ducking behind tables and around corners to seek shelter.” The fatality took place “on the sidewalk along Hill Street, steps from G&B Coffee, Horse Thief, and other restaurant vendors.” (L.A. Eater)
- On Friday, the LAFD headed to the 12900 block of Magnolia Boulevard to deal with a brush fire. “It took 29 Los Angeles Fire Department responders 22 minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish fast-moving flames among thick vegetation.” The flora at the adjacent Armstrong Garden Centers remained safe. (LAFD)
- The City Council had a chance to review Mayor Eric Garcetti's proposed budget and made some changes. We learned on Saturday that the planned hiring of around 780 LBPD officers may be closer to 600 or so. Other changes include the request to add “18 positions to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation for active transportation infrastructure project delivery and restore more than 30 programmatic and service delivery positions.” (Spectrum News 1)
- We learned on Monday that Evan Spiegel, co-founder of Snapchat, and Miranda Kerr, founder of Kora, paid the college debt of 284 graduates of the Otis College of Art and Design. The couple took on debt totaling around $10 million. (MSN)
- Mark your calendars! If you’re looking for work, are at least 21 years old, and have a driver’s license, you might want to head to Saturday’s Metro bus operator hiring event. Running from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., there’s a $3,000 sign-on bonus on the table. Starting pay is $20.49 an hour. One of the benefits you might like is tuition reimbursement. (Metro)

Are you a Los Angeles resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
