💧 Water Crisis Poll! 💧
Residents are limited to watering their landscapes two days per week, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. What else should the City do to deal with the water crisis? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 17% want to mandate drought-resistant landscaping, 19% want to recycle wastewater for irrigation, another 43% want to build a desalination plant at the coast, and 21% don’t believe residential water use contributes to the water crisis.

Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. As of Wednesday, there is a new stop sign at 106th Street and Santa Ana Boulevard. It is a part of the Slow Street Program we have discussed. “This safety feature improves safety for Angelenos in the area by slowing and stopping vehicles so people walking and biking can enjoy use of the street.” (LA DOT)
  2. Despite celebrity water wasters we discussed earlier, Wednesday’s DWP report shows that Los Angeles is saving water. “Last month saw the all-time lowest water use for any month of June on record in the city of Los Angeles, with usage dropping by 9% compared to last June, according to the DWP.” Concurrently, the DWP has seen “a 44% rise in the number of reports it receives about water-wasters.” (NBC)
  3. We recently talked about Starbucks closing locations at “Hollywood and Vine, Hollywood and Western, two in Little Tokyo, another on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood and one next to the Santa Monica Pier.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti responded that he is “committed to doubling down with LAPD and with other strategies to make sure we can have safe spaces, safe places and that businesses can feel secure.” In contrast, West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister suggests that “she doesn't know if Starbucks has any more reason to be concerned than any other store.” (NBC)
  4. United to House LA proposes the so-called mansion tax. The goal is to “increase affordable housing and provide resources to tenants at risk of homelessness.” To do so, the organization proposes “4% of the consideration or value when the property transferred exceeds $5 million but is less than $10 million, and 5.5% when the property transferred is $10 million or more.” We learned on Wednesday that the Los Angeles Democratic Party endorses the mansion tax. (United to House LA, 2)
  5. Mark your calendars! The Grammy Awards are coming back on February 5. This year, they were moved to Las Vegas. Next year, they will be at the Crypto.com arena. (NBC)
