Do you celebrate? So far, 45.5% take a bah-humbug approach, while another 45.5% plan on a Valentine’s Day with all the trimmings. 4.5% each plan on celebrating Galentine’s Day or Singles Awareness Day.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- When the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) attempted on Wednesday to serve a warrant at a home on Sunswept Drive, “an hours-long barricade situation involving an assault with a deadly (weapon) suspect” ensued. As usual, SWAT rolled, negotiated, followed that up with “some type of gas,” and got “all the occupants out of the house.” Neighbors say that the residence “belongs to a well-known music producer” —however, the LAPD emphasized that “the owner of the home is not a suspect.” (ABC)
- Though the rainstorm didn’t reach the biblical proportions hyped in media, it led to snarled traffic Thursday morning. The Sepulveda Basin flooded. Besides that, the California Highway Patrol closed “Burbank Boulevard from the 405 Freeway to Balboa Avenue, and Woodley Avenue from Burbank Boulevard to Victory Boulevard.” In prior years, cars were swept away there. The westbound lane of the I-105 at Western Avenue had a plugged drain causing a washout, which led to the closure of the right lane. (KTLA, Caltrans District 7)
- We learned on Thursday that UCLA and the Gabrielino Tongva tribe reached an agreement on land use. “Members of the Gabrielino Tongva tribe will advise UCLA on planting and land caretaking practices across campus.” Other areas will be designed for tribal use, such as the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden and the undeveloped Sage Hill. (Spectrum News 1)
- The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) announced on Tuesday that the owner of the Ocha Classic Restaurant chain in Los Angeles “denied 83 workers overtime wages and kept false pay records in an attempt to hide the wage theft.” The government agency recovered $1,651,550 in back wages and damages. Locations for Ocha range from South Vermont Avenue to Sunset Boulevard. (DoL)
- Mumford Brewing at 416 Boyd Street is no more. A pillar in the local craft beer community, the brewery announced on Sunday its closure. “The last few years have been tough on the business and hard on the industry in general. At this point, we have made the hard choice to shut our doors.” And just like that, more than seven years and countless food pop-ups later, it’s over. (Mumford Brewing)
