🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 42.9% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 29.9% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.3% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 26% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
1) Tony’s Market murder update: On October 8, we reported that a 69-year-old liquor store clerk was attacked, hit over the head with a scooter and killed. On Wednesday, we learned that a 14-year-old teen was arrested on suspicion of this crime. Previously, a 13-year-old boy was arrested. The victim’s daughter said that “hearing dates for both teenagers have been set for this month and that two female suspects face robbery charges.” (Patch, The Eastsider LA)
2) Actor Denise Richards and her husband were shot at while en route to Popsicle Studio L.A. on Western Avenue. We learned it was a road rage incident that happened on Monday, while they were having a difficult time finding the location. Reportedly, “the driver behind them was getting irritated, shouting at them while trying to squeeze in front of them,” and the driver shot at them. Law enforcement cannot find any 911 call reporting the incident. (TMZ, NBC)
3) An armed security guard shot a knife-wielding man in the Target store on 7th Street and Figueroa. The man had attacked a 9-year-old boy and a 25-year-old woman. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said that the suspect was “dressed in homeless attire” and “has been pronounced dead.” (KTLA)
4) Fourteen veterans filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on Tuesday. They allege that the VA campus in West LA was supposed to get 1,200 affordable apartments, but the agency instead “pushes the region’s neediest veterans into temporary shelters, psychiatric facilities, and jails.” It is important to remember that the property the campus sits on was donated with the stipulation that the land “must be used to house disabled veterans.” (KCRW)
5) A Los Angeles man is making deals with the homeless. He visits encampments offering people there “food, clothing, supplies, & even cannabis if they keep their encampments clean.” The approach seems to be working. The man believes that going this route humanizes people experiencing homelessness, provides an incentive to keep areas clean, and makes it more likely that they connect with social workers.
