What to expect along California coast when tsunami waves arrive
In the next few hours, the California coast will experience impacts from the massive quake that hit off Russia's eastern coast. The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services urged people to move out of the water, off the beach and away from harbors.
In 2011, a tsunami from the devastating Japan earthquake also battered some coastal areas of California, resulting in more than $100 million in damage. In 1964, the Alaskan earthquake of 1964 set off a catastrophic tsunami that devastated Crescent City, washing away 29 city blocks and killing at least 11 people.

Map of California tsunami hazard zones: Look up your address
The entire West Coast from Washington to Mexico border was under a tsunami advisory after an 8.8 quake rocked Russia earlier in the day. The California Geological Survey has created maps showing hazard zones along the entire coast.

Tsunami watch for California: What we know, how to prepare
A tsunami warning was issued for the West Coast, including California, after a massive earthquake off the coast of eastern Russia. The public was advised to prepare to take action and stay alert for further information. If the tsunami materializes, it would reach Fort Bragg in Mendocino County at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday and Monterey at 12:15 a.m., San Francisco at 12.40 a.M., the Los Angeles Harbor at 1:05 a. M. and Newport Beach at 1.10 AM. There are two types of tsunamis: a local-source and a distant-source event.

Tsunami Warning Issued for 100-Mile Stretch of Northern California
The National Weather Service issued an upgraded tsunami warning Tuesday night for a 100-mile stretch of Northern California's coastline between Cape Mendocino and the border with Oregon. Waves of up to 5 feet high were expected to reach Crescent City, 20 miles south of the Oregon border, just before midnight Pacific time. Crescent City has been hit by 32 tsunamis since 1933. The one that hit in 1964 killed 11 people and destroyed 29 city blocks.

Tsunami warnings: How high could the waves be in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and California?
A strong earthquake hit near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, June 30. It triggered tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for Japan, parts of Russia, Alaska and the Pacific. The tremors occurred at 8:25 am (2325 GMT Tuesday). Tsunami waves could reach Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and California in the next few hours. Russia could see waves greater than 3 metres, Japan could see 1 to 3 metres and Hawaii 1-3 metres. Pacific islands including Midway Island, Johnston Atoll, Palmyra Island and Palau could see 0.3 to 1 metres.
