Destination Cairns
This town at the very top of Queensland is well worth a visit. Lots to see and do for all ages

I love doing an itinerary for someone going to the top end and here are some suggestions for you to go see. The skyrail cable car over the rain forest, the great barrier reef, a great day trip out to snorkel , Daintree and Cape Tribulation, Kuranda, take the old stream train up and ride the sky rail back down, great beaches, Port Douglas, and Lizard Island which is a great honeymoon destination. If you want to take a 3-4 day cruise along the reef, Capt Cook Cruises is who you book with. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park is worth going to. The night market is fun to go to, everything from food to fashion, didgeridoo players and artists working while you watch. Smashing place to buy an Opal or a Sapphire.
This is the sportfishing capital of the world, absolutely smashing deep sea fishing, catch a 1000 lb black Marlin.
The most unusual day trip in the world, is to play "postie" (mail man ) for a day. This is the world's longest mail run servicing 70 remote stations on the Cape, and Cape York Air is always willing to take passengers. You get to visit with the Aussies who live in this remote region, have a cuppa (tea) with them, and they love to chat with foreigners. This is the only way these people get freight or post, the children go to the School of the Air, the the Royal Flying Doctor service gives them medical attention.

The Cape York peninsula and the little town of Cooktown (named because Capt.Cook docked there)
is the most remote place I have been to in Australia. The people who live in this region are tough, survivors, and like living in houses with tin walls and roofs.

Lots of good restaurants in Cairns, hotels, resorts, and it will meet every budget. It's super casual, become of the climate. However, two seasons, the wet and the dry.
They speak a different language. Fun to learn some of them. My roommate at University in Scotland was a banana bender, name of someone from Queensland and I was an expert after living with her. Here are some for your to remember.
Mate/friend, bloke/man, Yak/talk, Yonks/a long time, bugger off/go away, bin/prison, bees knees/the best, banger/sausage, big smoke/city, and the one which makes me laugh, dead horse/tomato sauce.
Going to the top end is a great experience.
