Edinburgh, the Festival City
One of my favorite cities, here are my recommendations for restaurants and places to stay

August in Edinburgh has a character all of its own. The covid pandemic brought all events to a halt, but hopefully next year we will be able to enjoy the city. Two events I always enjoy is the Book Festival, and the Military Tattoo when pipe bands from all over the world come and put on a show. Even if you don't like bagpipes, this is a show worth seeing.
Where to Eat
Eating is always a pleasurable part o being in Edinburgh at festival time. Angels with Bagpipes (angelswithbagpipes.co.uk) and (wedgewoodtherestaurant.co.uk) both on the Royal Mile and in the New Town. Cafe St. Honore (cafest.honore.com) and Fishers in the City (fishersrestaurants.co.uk)

One place I have been meaning to try is the Little Chartroom (the littlechartroom.com) on Leith Walk, which has been getting quiet a bit of attention locally before the pandemic. Two tradition pubs are also worth a mention. The Abbotsford on Rose Rose (theabbotford.com) does a smashing haggis, neeps and tatties, while the Cafe Royal (caferoyaledinburgh.com ( is hard to beat for its oysters, gastro grub and dramatic surroundings.
Where to Stay

The Witchery on the Royal Mile (thewitchery.com) right by the castle has some of the most flamboyant Gothic inspired suites imaginable. For a touch more peace, book a stay in the Witchery's sister hotel, Prestonfield House (prestonfield.com ) which is equally theatrical but benefits from a country estate setting with peacocks on the lawn and incredible views of Arthurs Seat.
It will be possible to stay inside the most distinctive part of the new St. James Quarter (stjamesquarter.com) when a 12 story 200 plus room hotel will take up residence in the striking circular. Set to open in 2022, the W.Edinburgh (w-hotels.marriott.com) will bring its unique spin on luxury to the city with its rooftop spaces expected to the a major attraction.
I enjoy a stay here at any time of year.
