Los Altan Bob Armstrong, the founder of Runners World, makes this race number 39 in his year of 50 races to celebrate his 50 years of running.

It was a time for lederhosen and running shoes.

And beer. Don't forget the beer.

Los Altos resident Bob Anderson made Saturday's run his 39th of the year. In January, the founder of Runner's World magazine kicked off his "A Long Run," 50 races for 50 years of running. This was his first time participating in Campbell's Oktoberfest 5K.

"It's a fun local race," Anderson says. " I like the big races but I love the community races. All in all, it was perfect."

It's one for 50 races that might make it into his documentary, "A Long Run" (ALongRun.com) that follows his year of racing. Armstrong turned 64 last year and began reminiscing about running, which he started at 14.

His goal is to race at least 350 miles at better than 7 minutes per mile.

"It's something that I do well and it gives me such a great high," Anderson told Patch. "Running makes it so that I can eat what I want to eat and enjoy life."

This is his first Oktoberfest. Next up, the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot.

Grayson Lam and Aaron Haug, 10th graders from Westmont High School and part of the school's cross-country team participated in the race Saturday morning. Aaron took second place in his division.

Clad in lederhosen, father-son team, Creg and Chris Ballou came out for their first go at the Oktoberfest 5k.

"We enjoyed it very much," Sunnyvale resident Creg Ballou says. " It's our fourth time going to Oktoberfest. My wife is from Germany so we're moved to drink beer, naturally."

His son, San Jose resident Chris found out about the race and signed the two up.

"Gotta run for a beer!" he says. "I earned it."

Campbell Mayor Mike Kotowski and Councilman Jason Baker were both participants as well, with Kotowski clinching first place in his division.

Kotowski says he's run every year but was disappointed by his time this year, slower than last year's, due to a knee injury.

"The run today was great," said Baker who has run the race three times now. "All the fun people make it feel like a social event, not just a run."
