LOS GATOS, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Christine Lim who nominated Alexis of Los Gatos.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Alexis Leo was accepted as a full time undergraduate student in July 2022 at Cal State LA after she completed her 7th grade. (She was about to turn 12 years old then!) Unfortunately we had to decline the opportunity because of logistic reasons (we could not move down to LA then). Although disappointed, she found a way to dual enroll herself at a community college during her 8th grade year, and will now graduate with 12 UC-approved college units by June 2023. She is a very active student-athlete in her current school — she is Vice President of Student Council, Captain of her School Volleyball Team and plays the cello in her school orchestra. She is also active in three youth orchestras outside school and also plays club (power level) volleyball competitively. She has been debating competitively over the past 2 years and is competing in the Middle School Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in May 2023. Alexis also is very active in community service, accumulating over 100 service hours through her school, the National Charity League (she was President of the Heritage Oaks Chapter Class of 2027 during the 2021-2022 year) and the Global Organization of Youth Cultural Ambassadors (GO-YCA). She is the epitome of grit and diligence- she never gives up and always tries her best in all situations. She is also a very kind student and always helps others who are in need.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Alexis is a stand out student athlete and has achieved a lot for a 12 year old — but what impresses me the most is the kindness she always extends to everyone around her. She is very mature and responsible for her age and she always sees things through. She always tries to be inclusive and she respects diversity of thought. We are extremely proud of her.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Alexis!
