San Jose Reports City's 1st Pedestrian Traffic Deaths Of The Year

Police are investigating two cases where drivers fatally struck pedestrians in recent weeks.

SAN JOSE, CA — Traffic detectives are investigating San Jose's first pedestrian deaths of the year, city officials announced this week.

The San Jose Police Department said the first known case happened shortly before 2 a.m. near Monterey Road and Skyway Drive. Police said a woman driving an SUV was headed south on Monterey when she hit a woman walking in a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later died.

Investigators said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with detectives. The victim's identity will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office.

In the second case, police said the initial crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. on Dec. 29. Officers learned a woman driving westbound on Umbarger Road hit a man walking southbound outside of a marked crossing. Medics rushed the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later stabilized. However, police said his condition worsened and the man was pronounced dead on Jan. 13. The driver in that case remained at the scene.
