South Bay Freeway A 'Moving River': NWS

Highway 101 in the Gilroy area was among at least two major South Bay roadways closed Monday afternoon.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The latest in a series of powerful storms has flooded at least two major South Bay roadways.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 101 near Highway 25 in the Gilroy-area, and the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 35 in Los Gatos in the area of Bear Creek Road were closed due to flooding as of 4 p.m., according to 511.

The National Weather Service is calling a stretch of Highway 101 near Gilroy a “moving river.”

Separate landslides triggered closures on Highway 17 southbound south of Glenwood Drive and Highway 9 at Holiday Lane in both directions.

The storm affecting the Bay Area and beyond has prompted widespread evacuations, flooding, downed trees, mudslides and power outages.

The National Weather Service forecast for Monday for the greater San Francisco Bay area calls for rain in the morning followed by an afternoon lull, before rain picks up again in the evening. Highs will be in the mid 50s. There is a flood warning and a high wind advisory throughout the Bay Area and a fog advisory for Marin, Sonoma and Napa Counties.

Monday night calls for more rain, with lows in the 40s.
