Inside Malibu's Proposed Skate Park

MALIBU, CA — The city of Malibu continued to move plans forward for a permanent skate park near Malibu Bluffs Park.

Plans for the skate park began in 2019, but the city recently submitted a Coastal Development Permit for city staff to review and ensure plans are consistent with the city's Local Coastal Program, or guidelines for coastal building. If city staff consider the skate park plans complete, Malibu's planning commission will host a public hearing on the skate park as early as summer 2023.

The city in 2020 opened a temporary skate park adjacent to Malibu Bluffs Park, located at 24250 Pacific Coast Highway, which remains open while plans continue for a permanent park on the east portion of the property, according to the city.

The city's Parks and Recreation Commission already approved a preliminary design for the park, designed by California Skateparks, which includes light blue detailing, tons of greenery and a mountain backdrop classic to Malibu's coastline.

The permanent skate park will ultimately be 12,500 square feet along Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu Canyon Road, according to city documents. Designers already consulted community members in and around Malibu, primarily between the ages of 11 and 20, to determine what qualities and amenities would be important.

Results from 2020 surveys showed most interest in a hybrid street/plaza and transition/bowl style skatepark, and quarter pipes and banks. Respondents also showed interest in mini ramps and an intermediate or advanced bowl. Respondents ranked and critiqued two different design concepts that were presented to city staff.
