Malibu's Next Disaster Volunteer Course Begins May 6

The Community Emergency Response Team helps Malibu residents in the event of natural disasters.

MALIBU, CA — Want to help your neighbors during wildfires, earthquakes and other natural disasters? Malibu's next Community Emergency Response Team training course beings in May.

CERT is program that empowers residents in communities nationwide to help themselves and their neighbors during disasters. Volunteers are trained in basic first aid, fire suppression, and search and rescue.

"CERT volunteers are a crucial part of the city's ability to prepare and respond to disasters," reads a release from Malibu officials.

During and after the Palisades Fire, the CERT Team provided 1,500 hours of vital support. The team continues to assist with Pacific Coast Highway entry pass distribution.

During the Woolsey Fire, Malibu volunteers worked for a total of 300 hours distributing food and medical supplies, conducting wellness checks, assisting with evacuations and administering basic first aid, according to the city.

The next round of CERT classes will be held at City Hall from 6 to 9 p.m. May 6-24.
