MALIBU, CA — The city has a new mayor after Councilmember Marianne Riggins was nominated by her colleagues to serve a one-year term as the council's leader.

Councilmember Bruce Silverstein was also nominated by the council at the April 28 meeting to serve as mayor pro tem, replacing Riggins in that role. Riggins replaces outgoing mayor Doug Stewart.

Riggins said her first priority is to continue the recovery from the Broad, Franklin and Palisades fires. "We’re applying lessons from the Woolsey Fire to improve how we support residents now and in future disasters," she said.

She's committed to getting homes rebuilt as fast as possible, she added.

“We’re also investing in community amenities—construction has begun on the Permanent Skate Park, and we’ve started planning an arts center with the Arts Commission. We’ll keep pushing for an independent Malibu Unified School District. Please stay engaged —tell us what you need. I’m excited to work with my fellow Councilmembers and optimistic about Malibu’s future," she said.
