An untagged mountain lion was struck and killed by a vehicle Tuesday night near Leo Carrillo State Beach.

MALIBU, CA — A mountain lion was fatally struck by a car in Malibu Tuesday night, according to state authorities.

An adult male mountain lion was hit around 6:30 p.m. on Pacific Coast (1) Highway near Leo Carrillo State Beach, according to Tim Daly of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The puma had serious injuries including broken bones, lacerations and likely internal injuries. The animal died at the scene as authorities attempted to subdue and bring it to a local veterinarian, Daly said.

The mountain lion was not collared, meaning it was not part of the National Park Service's Santa Monica Mountains puma study.
