MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Manhattan Beach officials announced the partial closure of a public parking lot due to concerns with the seismic safety of the structure.

Parking Lot 3 was built in 1971 before modern building codes that include crucial seismic safety measures were enforced. A 2022 seismic assessment found that both the second and third levels of the structure weren't up to standards.

City officials closed the top level of the structure Monday due to significant degradation, including rusting steel rebar and corroding steel columns. The staircases leading from the second level to the third were also deemed hazardous for pedestrians due to rusted handrails and corroded support structures.
