Manhattan Beach Troop Adds Four New Eagle Scouts

Manhattan Beach Boy Scout Troop 849 officially recognized four new Eagle Scouts Sunday at a ceremony held at the American Martyrs' Church.

The troop held the official Eagle Scout Court of honor to recognize new eagle scouts Tanner Bernard, Michael Hadley, Brett Salazar and AJ Shoemaker.

In attendance was Manhattan Beach Mayor David Lesser and City Council member Wayne Powell, who in the past had also earned himself the rank of Eagle Scout and is a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association.

The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest ranking a Boy Scout can achieve in the Boy Scouts of America.

According to the Boy Scouts, in order to advance to the rank of eagle, a scout must obtain 21 merit badges, serve in a troop leadership position, complete an extensive community service project and pass an Eagle Scout board of review, among other things.

Only five percent of all Boy Scouts progress through the five ranks of the Boy Scouts and end up becoming Eagle Scouts.
