MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Jesse Alexander has been named as the new fire chief in Manhattan Beach, city officials announced today.

Alexander, with more than 24 years of experience in firefighting, began his role on Monday, according to Manhattan Beach city officials.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chief Alexander to the Manhattan Beach family,” City Manager Talyn Mirzakhanian said in a statement Tuesday. “His genuine commitment to his firefighters and the communities he serves really stood out throughout our process. We are confident he will build strong relationships here while drawing on his experience to support and elevate our already excellent fire services.”

Alexander began his career as a firefighter with CalFire in the Auburn area. In 2001, he joined the Chico Fire Department in Northern California, where he worked for 19 years and served as a division chief of training and in administration, city officials said.

He demonstrated leadership during the deadly 2018 Camp Fire, which prepared him for his role as Fire Chief in Yuba City in 2020, according to city officials.

During his five years in Yuba City, he paved the way for a 25% increase in staffing, multiple fire station remodels and new fire apparatus, the establishment of a mental health task force, and the development of an overarching emergency preparedness plan, according to city officials.

The Yuba City Fire Department, in a social media post Thursday, said Alexander's efforts left a "lasting mark" on everyone.

"We are incredibly grateful for his leadership, dedication, and the countless contributions he’s made to the Yuba City Fire Department and our entire community," the department said in the statement. "Wishing you nothing but success and happiness in your next chapter—thank you for everything, Chief. You will always be part of the YCFD family."

City officials in Yuba described Alexander as a well-respected leader who has been a "stabilizing force and a pillar of excellence and humility" for his department.

"Serving the people of Yuba City has been my honor," Alexander said in a farewell statement in June. "I am incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me by the community, my first-responder family, and City leadership. While I am excited for my next chapter, Yuba City will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you."

Manhattan Beach's last Fire Chief, Michael Lang, retired in December, following a 32-year career.

Lang spent just over three years with the department, saying in December that it was a "privilege: to have served Manhattan Beach residents.

“I am proud of what we have achieved together and am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the Department and our community," Lang said in December.
