Retired South Bay Police Dog With Distinguished Career Dies
During his seven-year career, Koa was responsible for helping take thousands of pounds of drugs off the street, according to authorities.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — A beloved police dog who retired following a distinguished seven-year career in Manhattan Beach has died, according to authorities.
The Manhattan Beach Police Department announced on social media Monday that Koa, who retired in 2024 and was living with his handler, passed away sometime last week.
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of retired MBPD K-9 Koa," the Manhattan Beach Police Department said in a statement on social media Monday. "Koa was well known around the station for startling just about every employee who walked past his patrol car with his booming bark."

Koa, a German Shepherd, joined the Manhattan Beach Police Department in 2017, where he was deployed over 150 times and assisted with numerous felony arrests. He also served a crucial role in taking the seizure of thousands of pounds of drugs off the streets and over $1 million related to drug trafficking, according to authorities.
Following his retirement, Koa spent his days chasing squirrels, taking long naps and being the "life of the party" during family gatherings, according to the department.
