Suspect Crashes into Manhattan Beach Pier

An Orange County man was arrested on suspicion of several charges, including felony evading and misdemeanor possession of cocaine.

A motorist fleeing police who crashed his vehicle on the Manhattan Beach Pier early today has been taken into custody, authorities said.

Devin Ashley Chavez, 28, of Cypress was arrested about 1 a.m. and booked on suspicion of evading police, driving under the influence, and possession of cocaine, Manhattan Beach police Officer Stephanie Martin said.

Chavez was held on $75,000 bail, and was scheduled to appear in court in Torrance on Monday, according to the sheriff’s department.

The chase began when a Manhattan Beach police officer saw a vehicle being drive slowly with no lights on, and tried to pull it over, Martin said.

“The suspect vehicle sped off westbound on Manhattan Beach Boulevard,” Martin said “Due to the suspect driving at a high rate of speed, the officer backed off the pursuit. “However, the suspect continued to drive, and subsequently crashed through a ... barrier at the base of the Manhattan Beach Pier,” Martin said.

The vehicle went onto the pier, where it crashed into a concrete bench and came to a stop, police said.
