Sunny Afternoon, Eagle Scouts and Spiking Peach

Volleyball spiker Tanner Beach, a Playa del Rey native, and his St. Monica Catholic H.S. teammates host a first round playoff game tonight.

Today is May 10. It is the 130th day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 7:46 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for sunny skies with a high near 66 degrees with patchy fog tonight after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 52 degrees.

2. Congratulations to Ryan Morimoto and Brennon Chen, both of Troop 764 in Marina del Rey, for reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. Morimoto and Chen are among five college-bound Eagle Scouts from the Western Los Angeles County Council who will receive scholarships from Gelson's Markets Eagle Scout Scholarships totaling $16,000. The regional council had 279 Scouts reach the Eagle Scout rank during the 2010-11 school year. Morimoto and Chen will be recognized and receive their scholarships tonight at the Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner at the Airtel Plaza Hotel in Van Nuys. Los Angeles Daily News columnist Dennis McCarthy will provide the keynote address.

3. Playa del Rey native Tanner Peach is a senior at St. Monica Catholic High School and a volleyball spiker extraordinaire. Peach pounded 295 kills in 22 matches this season and led his team to a perfect 10-0 record in the Camino Real League. Tanner and his teammates host a first round CIF playoffs match tonight.
