Tam Valley Man in Custody After Bizarre Two-Hour Standoff

A Tam Valley apartment complex was the site of a bizarre, two-hour standoff Wednesday afternoon between multiple law enforcement agencies and an unarmed man who reportedly that yelled at Marin County Sheriff’s deputies that he “had guns and wanted to kill the police,” according to the the Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began with a 911 call from a resident in the area of the Northern Apartments in the area of Maple Street and Northern Avenue just off Shoreline Highway, according to Sheriff's Lt. Jamie Scardina. The caller reported that someone was yelling “please help” from a nearby unit, and that the person threw an object through the window and yelled “there has been a murder committed inside," he said.

Sheriff's deputies, the California Highway Patrol, U.S. Park Police and the Southern Marin Fire Protection District responded to the incident, evacuating the neighborhood and establishing a perimeter for negotiations.

After an hour-long standoff, police forced entrance into the apartment to find no crime had been committed, and there were no guns in the home.

A 59-year old male Tam Valley resident was taken for a mental health evaluation.
