Fall Means Rutting Season, Be On The Lookout For Deer

Being surrounded by beautiful wooded mountains, puts Mill Valley in the heart of deer sighting country. 

"One of the best things about living in Tam Valley is having deer in our yards," says Tam Valley Improvement Club, "Deer are beautiful, elegant and peaceful creatures. Unfortunately they eat our prize roses and just about anything else they want to eat, and they run out in front of our cars on rainy nights, causing accidents. But life wouldn't be the same without them."

Fall is breeding season for deer, also known as rutting season. Wildcare Solutions of the Bay Area explains that during The Rut, bucks can become aggressive and unpredictable due to elevated testostrone levels.

"During this time please exercise caution and give deer plenty of space, especially the bucks," the company warns, "never approach or crowd deer, it is best to avoid them. And remember, even if you encounter just a doe, is it very possible a buck is somewhere close by."

Wildcare Solutions warns, "During rutting season, more people are killed by deer than any other time of year; if you get too close to a buck during the rut, there is a high probability you could be charged."

Although Patch was unable to locate any deer attacked-related deaths in Marin County, the Marin IJ reported a Corte Madera dog was left paralyzed and bleeding after a buck attack just two-months ago.
