MARIN COUNTY — The Marin County Free Library is offering museum tickets, books, toys and a thousand free backpacks with school supplies to children and their families at various library events through next week.

Backpacks come with a notebook, markers, colored pencils, crayons, pencils, a sharpener, an eraser, scissors, a glue stick and a lunchbox to match.

"This annual celebration of school readiness across the county is one of MCFL's favorite events," Marin County Free Library director Lana Adlawan said. "Collectively, we're committed to ensuring student success and uplifting the joy in learning for all young children in Marin."

The library will distribute the supplies at several events taking place across the county through June 26. So far, the library has distributed more than 500 backpacks and plans to distribute more at four remaining events hosted at the Fairfax Library on Thursday, the Bolinas Library on Friday, the Novato Library next Tuesday and the Corte Madera Library on June 26.

Families at these events can also receive free passes to the Bay Area Discovery Museum and books in English and Spanish.

The events are part of the "Summer with the Learning Bus" program. The Learning Bus, according to the Marin County Free Library website, is a free, drop-in program for preschool-age children with bilingual activities and games that support early development.

Families unable to attend the events can contact the Learning Bus program to pick up a backpack at a library branch, Learning Bus program coordinator Alejandra Cruz said.

Established in 2020 as part of a partnership with First 5 Marin and the Friends of the Marin County Free Library, this summer marks the program's fourth backpack giveaway, Cruz added.
