Marin Attempted Murder Suspect Caught After 30-Foot Fall

SAUSALITO, CA — A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder late Saturday night, captured after he jumped 30 feet down a steep hillside and impaled his wrist on a piece of rebar sticking out of the ground, Sausalito police said.
Eric Nelson, 30, of Sausalito and Vacaville, was hospitalized after midnight Sunday morning for surgery on his wrist after his arrest for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend at a residence on San Carlos Avenue, police said.
Police were called by the victim's ex-boyfriend, who police said was confronted in front of the residence by Nelson, the woman's current boyfriend. Police also believe that Nelson fired one gunshot at the ex-boyfriend.

Sausalito officers, joined by officers from the Marin County Sheriff's Office, the Mill Valley Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the San Rafael Police Department, helped search the area. A San Rafael police dog found Nelson hiding in bushes along San Carlos Avenue; Nelson then led officers on a foot chase to a staircase railing at a residence in the area of Atwood and Bulkley Avenues. Nelson jumped over the staircase railing and fell 30 feet down a hill, where he impaled his wrist.
Police found a .357 caliber Colt revolver in the bushes where Nelson had been hiding.

When medically cleared, police said, Nelson will be booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, domestic violence, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm and resisting arrest. The Sausalito Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident, which may result in additional charges.
