MARIN COUNTY, CA — Road maintenance all over Marin County started on Wednesday and will cause certain roads to shut down, officials said.

Starting this summer, 25 miles of the County's 421-mile road network will undergo pavement preservation and is expected to take five months, weather permitting, according to officials.

County officials said the purpose of the pavement work is to use roadway service treatments to help preserve pavement in an attempt to postpone more invasive rehabilitation projects.

The project, estimated at $3.5 million, is funded by Senate Bill 1 and the County’s Road and Bridge Fund, officials said.

The overall project of pavement preservation will be staggered by location and includes sections of roadway in Dillon Beach, Fairfax, Kentfield, Marin City, Mill Valley, Point Reyes, Santa Venetia, Sleep Hollow, Strawberry, Tomales, and Valley Ford, as well as segments of Fairfax-Bolinas Road and Muir Woods Road.

Pavement sealing began Wednesday in unincorporated Mill Valley and Sleepy Hollow, lasting until early August. Locals can expect 5-minute traffic delays. Road details are on the project webpage.

From Aug. 5 to Aug. 8, the County will undertake phased improvements at the railroad crossing on Grandview Avenue near Harbor Drive. This crossing serves as a key access point for a large portion of the Black Point community and the work will result in varying traffic impacts.

Traffic control will be in effect from 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m. on Aug. 5-6 and from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7-8. Grandview Avenue will also close nightly near Harbor Drive from 9 p.m. on Aug. 6 to 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 7 for construction. Only emergency vehicles will have access during this time. This closure, affecting many in the Black Point community, is understood to be inconvenient, officials said.
