A preliminary investigation into the Tuesday death of a 30-year-old inmate found no signs of foul play, according to the sheriff's office.
MILPITAS, CA — A 30-year-old inmate died Tuesday shortly after deputies found him unresponsive inside his cell at the Elmwood Correctional Facility, according to the sheriff's office.
Officials said deputies and medical staff were dispatched to the cell around 9:09 p.m. and began administering CPR. Medics from the Milpitas Fire Department arrived roughly 15 minutes later and rushed the man to hospital for emergency care. Despite lifesaving efforts, officials said he was pronounced dead at 10:08 p.m.
The sheriff's office opened a death investigation and said preliminary findings suggested no signs of foul play. Detectives will work with the District Attorney's Office and the Santa Clara Medical Examiner-Coroner to complete a joint investigation, following standard protocol for in-custody deaths.
