Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus Fail to Win Write-In Campaigns for City Council

Voters chose some interesting and humorous candidates to write on the ballot in this week's City Council elections.

Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse could not be reached for comment on this story.

Both Claus and the world's most famous animated mouse received write-in votes on City Council ballots, according to City Clerk Alice Atkins. Ebenezer Scrooge also garnered support from local voters.

Atkins said she's seen all sorts of interesting write-in votes in her time as city clerk.

"Some people just write in their neighbor or their dad," she said. "But some people get creative."

Atkins said the fictional candidates were scattered all over the ballot; some people voted Mickey for Mayor, others only wanted him on the City Council.

In terms of frequency, Atkins estimated that Mickey Mouse was the most popular fanciful write-in candidate in this election and years past. But he did not receive enough votes to defeat anyone on the ballot.
