The Monrovia dog that was injured in a confrontation with a bear appeared on KCAL9 News Thursday as his owner described the incident in a segment that aired Thursday evening.

Mauna Loa Avenue resident Brian Ulm shared photos of the bear and the "battle scar" received by his 10-pound dog Cody with Patch earlier this week. He told KCAL that his dog is "one of those dogs that’s not scared of anything."
Cody chased the bear up a tree on Monday and came away with a small wound on his chest. Ulm said the bear apparently showed restraint and urged fellow hillside pet owners to be more vigilant about protecting their animals in a comment on Patch.
For my Monrovia and other foothill wilderness area community neighbors - this was a good wake up call for me to remember that we share our beautiful neighborhoods with the wild areas and wildlife we border on that help make where live so special. We need to stay alert and respectful of that natural world. For me that means from now on I am going to give my back yard a quick check before letting my dog out. Cody was in the house while I was at work, and when I let him out I suspect the bear was already in the yard since its highly unlikely he would have come into the yard if Cody was barking and on high alert. I left my home very briefly for an errand around the corner and the "incident" must have happened then. By the time I was back I just caught the treed bear half of the story that I am starting to put together more fully now. Obviously the 150-200 LB bear did not want to hurt my 30 LB dog or there would be more than a scratch on Cody. So let's all stay alert and keep our pets and our wildlife safe!
