UPDATE: Caltrain Strikes and Kills Man in San Mateo

 The No. 142 southbound Caltrain struck and killed an adult male in San Mateo around 11:45 p.m. this Wednesday, the officials say.

The person was on the tracks just north of the Hayward Station at Ninth Avenue in San Mateo. None of the 400 passengers or the crew on the train sustained any injuries.

"The cause of death will be made by the county coroner following a complete and thorough investigation," said Caltrain Spokeswoman Christine Dunn. "However, the preliminary investigation suggests that the man intentionally placed himself in front of the train."

The local train left San Francisco at 11:07 a.m. and had been scheduled to arrive in San Jose at 12:38 p.m.  It would have stopped at the Hayward Park station at 11:41 a.m.

Dunn shared that at 12:20 p.m. the northbound track opened and all trains would be routed to the northbound track. At about 1 p.m. the passengers on the train involved in the incident disembark at the Hayward Park station.

Eight people have died on the Caltrain right of way this year compared to 16 in 2011.
