Man Arrested for Battery Against Officer

The man had originally been detained for being under the influence and acting bizarre near the eastern side of Mountain View.

A Mountain View Police Officer suffered a head injury when he tried to control a man detained at a local hospital, officials disclosed today.

On Sunday, July 15 at 11:16 p.m., the received a 9-1-1 call that a man outside of at 715 E. El Camino Real had threatened him, according to department spokeswoman Liz Wylie.

When the officers arrived they found the suspect, Joseph Bliss, "acting bizarre in the parking lot," Wylie said.

Officers arrested Bliss for being under the influence of a controlled substance and transported him to the hospital for medical observation due to his behavior.

However, at the hospital Bliss allegedly lunged at a nurse and two officers brought him to the ground, "in a controlled manner," said Wylie.

According to Wylie, the suspect allegedly "continued to struggle" and three officers arrived to the hospital to provide emergency assistance and put him in restraints.

At this time, a male officer was allegedly struck in the head and according to Wylie, the officer required medical attention.

"The officer was treated at the hospital and suffered a sprain to his right foot and a forehead contusion," Wylie said.

After Bliss was cleared for incarceration, he was booked into the county jail for  an additional crime—battery on a police officer.
