New Laws, Fares, Taxes this July 1st

The busy legislative session up in Sacramento means that new laws come into effect, includng new anti-bullying ones for the schools and extra protection for used car buyers.

But residents of the Bay Area and also expect to pay more for things.

Tax in Santa Clara County will rise 0.125 percent from 8.25 to 8.375 percent countywide.

Also, several Bay Area transit agencies will increase fares starting Sunday.

In San Francisco, adult fast passes will increase $2 to $74 a month, and Muni-only passes will be $64. Passes for youth, seniors and disabled riders will also increase by $1, to $22.

BART fares will increase 1.4 percent, or about 5 cents for the average fare, according to BART officials. Golden Gate Transit bus and ferry fares will increase by 5 percent.

On for people buying paper tickets, 25 cents for a one-way ticket and 50 cents for a Day Pass. In addition, the discount for eight-ride tickets will be reduced from 15 percent off the one-way fare to 7.5 percent. The validity period of the tickets will also be cut in half, to 30 days. For users of Clipper transit cards, the amount deducted for passes and tickets will be adjusted automatically.
