Hemet Woman Struck And Killed 'Walking In The Middle Of The Road'

The 81-year-old woman was walking in traffic lanes for unknown reasons when a driver struck her on an east Hemet street.

HEMET, CA -- An 81-year-old woman was struck and killed Wednesday while walking along an East Hemet street.

The fatality occurred just after 7 a.m. on Standford Street, near Johnston Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jonathan Torres.

The 81-year-old victim, whose identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was walking in traffic lanes for unknown reasons when a Chrysler 300, traveling at an unconfirmed speed, hit her, Torres said.

The driver, identified only as a 38-year-old Hemet man, immediately stopped.

Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location minutes later and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

The motorist wasn't hurt and was detained for questioning by sheriff's deputies and CHP officers. However, the party was not arrested.

Torres said that alcohol or drugs don't appear to be factors in the fatality.
