ORIGINAL STORY: 9:30 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2013

A driver lost control of his car at a high rate of speed late Saturday night just north of Napa and hit a tree, killing him and fully engulfing the car in flames, according to he California Highway Patrol.

The driver was speeding in a 2004 Pontiac GTO on westbound Orchard Ave. east of Dry Creek Rd. at around 10:40 p.m. when the driver failed to negotiate a righthand curve, according to CHP Officer Mark Fowers.

The Pontiac went careening off the road in the 1300 block of Orchard and into a tree, Fowers said, and the result of the impact caused the car to burst into flames.

The driver, whose name is being withheld until positive identification can be made by the Napa County coroner's office via dental records on Monday, was pronounced dead at the scene, Fowers said.

Napa County Sheriff’s deputies were also on the screen of the crash, and Napa County Fire Department/CalFire crews pulled the body from the car.
