Fairfield Fire Along I-80 Destroys 5 Homes

Major fire breaks out at about 3:30 p.m. today.

A fire that apparently started in vegetation along Interstate 80 in Fairfield has spread to several homes, destroying at least five structures this afternoon.

The major blaze started at around 3:30 p.m., according to witness reports on ABC-TV7 News.

The TV station said a strike team of five Fairfield County Fire Department engines was deployed in the last hour and the fire appears to be getting somewhat contained.

At least 50 people have been evacuated to Fairfield High School, the station said. Traffic along I-80 is impacted, the newscasters said.
